White-Jacket is a novel that perfectly reflects on the American naval life of the 19th century and is widely based on his own experiences when he sailed on the USS United States as a seaman.

WhiteJacket Or The World In A ManOfWar eBook Herman Melville

This is a delightful book. Mr. Melville has a very sharp wit and a very observant individual was he. A friend suggested this book and I'm glad he did.Melville was on a sailing vessel back in the mid 18'00s. A web site my friend told me about was http://www.asailorslifeforme.org/ironsides_explore.php. The site is immensely helpful, for not very many folks would be familiar with all the terms of a day long gone by. Several hundred able bodied seaman manned these "Man o War" type vessels. Melville with this book White Jacket helped alert Congress of the horrific discipline of Flogging that took place during that time. Chapters are very short, and if one has any interest in history and would enjoy the wisdom, wit and charm of the author, my suggestion would be to Buy this book.

WhiteJacket Or The World In A ManOfWar eBook Herman Melville Reviews

A wonderful first-hand account of the life of a U.S. Sailor in the era of tall-ships. Being a fan of sea saga's (Hornblower, Drinkwater, James L. Nelson), and constructing wood models of ships, I really appreciate this tome. The book is over 500 pages in length. No plot, just observations of every detail of life and "things" on board the USS United States (sister ship of USS Constitution--"Old Ironsides"). The book is very critical of the navy and officers. It is interesting to me to read all the parallels between c.1840 in the military, and c.1970 when I was a soldier. Some things never change. I recommend this book to any History enthusiast, Sea lore fan, or Melville buff. I liked it so much, I am about to start "Moby Dick" the book he wrote after this one. (I avoided it all these years. I think it's time I read it.)
I don't give many 5-star reviews. This one deserves it, if it is the book you think it will be.

It is a study from a first-person POV in a US naval ship in the age of sail, told with wit, reflection, a moral sense (adapted to the times and situation), and a breathtaking immersive picaresque time voyage. In the same universe as Moby Dick, Typee, and Omoo, but from the angle of a common navy seaman.

The book includes personality studies and details some of the shameful and extreme rules and behaviors on board this universe with its own natural laws. Perhaps the definitive book in the genre of pre-steam war vessels, an engaging and picaresque effort of literature.
The author of Moby Dick wrote of his adventures in the U.S. navy. This book with it's graphic, though by today's standards tame, descriptions of sailors being whipped for petty offences along with well thought out arguments against the use of scourging helped convince the congress to outlaw it.
It took me a while to get caught up into the book, but by the end I was enjoying the stories and would recommend it.
It was sure no Moby Dick.
A classic piece of literature and one which forever changed the U.S. Navy. For those wishing they could serve in the "good old days," this is an eye opener. The military still has some harsh policies and pretty rotten people, but nowhere near as bad as the officers and policies of the 19th century.
This is a great primer before taking on Moby Dick. I never realized how funny Melville is in a Twain-like fashion! White Jacket's third party references and observations are hysterical. I would also highly recommend melville.org. You will exit this novel a better person, and you will carry its imagery with you forever. I truly believe that each character did and said what he would really do or say when White Jacket was written (1850). Interestingly, Melville lives and writes about 20 years before Twain. Twain's body of work is vastly larger and mostly better in every way--but it is silly for me (and a bit of a poser) to compare two giants amongst giants.
